Funeral Services & UK Guidance

Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult moments a family can face. KMEC Funeral Services aims to support you every step of the way — spiritually, emotionally, and practically — while ensuring the process is conducted respectfully and in line with Islamic traditions.

In Islam, it is highly recommended to bury the deceased as soon as possible — ideally within 24 hours. Delaying burial without necessity is discouraged. KMEC Funeral Services is here to guide you step by step, so that families can manage the process respectfully, legally, and efficiently while following Islamic traditions.

This guide explains everything — from the moment a loved one passes away, to burial, grave arrangements, fees, and practical support in the UK.

1. Immediate Steps After Death

❖ If Death Occurs at Home

  • Call a GP or Hospital Doctor: The death must be officially confirmed by a medical professional.
  • The doctor issues a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, which is legally required to arrange a burial.

❖ If Death Occurs in Hospital

  • The hospital will provide the medical certificate for you showing the Cause of Death.

❖ If the Death Is Sudden or Unexplained

  • A Coroner may be involved, which can temporarily delay issuing the certificate.

Tip: Mainly when someone dies, the first priority should be attaining the medical certificate showing Cause of Death. Start this process immediately — Islamic practice emphasizes not delaying burial unnecessarily.

2. Register the Death (Legal Requirement)

  • Must be done within 5 days in England, Wales & Northern Ireland (8 days in Scotland).
  • Visit your local register office to receive:
    • Death Certificate (get multiple copies — banks, employers, and authorities require originals)
    • Certificate for Burial, which is required before the burial can take place.

Bring: Medical Certificate, ID of the deceased, and your ID.

3. Contact a Funeral Director Quickly

A funeral director helps with:

  • Collecting and transporting the deceased
  • Coordinating burial at a local cemetery
  • Completing all legal documentation
  • Arranging Janāzah prayers and Islamic washing (Ghousal)

KMEC Funeral Services provides:

  • Full Islamic funeral arrangements
  • Purpose-built mortuary and Ghousal facilities
  • Assistance with local burial or overseas repatriation

4. Preparing for Burial

❖ Washing & Shrouding (Ghousal & Kafan)

  • Performed by trained male and female teams following Sunnah.
  • Female deceased are washed by female team; male deceased by male team.
  • KMEC mortuary provides privacy, proper facilities, and guidance.

❖ Janāzah Prayer

  • Led by a qualified Imam at KMEC or your local mosque.
  • It is an essential step before burial.

5. Burial in the UK

❖ Muslim‑Friendly Cemeteries in Kent

Hussain Hashim Memorial Gardens (Bluebell Muslim Cemetery)

  • Dedicated Muslim burial section within Bluebell Cemetery & Crematorium, Old London Road, Halstead, Kent, TN14 7AE.

    Contacts (24/7): 07956 510236 / 07930 433640

Families should contact these burial grounds early to align burial timing and logistics with Islamic practice.

❖ Muslim‑Friendly Cemeteries All Over UK

It is highly preferable to select a cemetery that can accommodate Islamic requirements (e.g. graves facing Qiblah, allowance for shroud burial and quick burial slots). Many local councils and organisations now offer Muslim burial areas:

  • National Burial Council – Muslim Cemeteries Directory – UK list of Muslim cemeteries and dedicated burial grounds.
  • Meadows of Peace – Muslim Cemetery (Bristol) – Dedicated Muslim burial section with graves arranged facing Qiblah.
  • Muslim Burial Council – list of councils with sections for Muslim graves – useful for finding Muslim areas within council cemeteries.
  • London Road Cemetery (St Albans) – example of a council cemetery with Muslim burial section and practice of same‑day burials when possible.

Some councils like Hounslow have dedicated Muslim sections (e.g. Borough Cemetery, Hatton Cemetery) that allow graves oriented toward Mecca; check with local bereavement teams before booking.

6. Costs & Fees

Typical fees to expect:

  • Local burial plot: £400–£1,500 (council dependent)
  • Funeral director & transport: £1,500–£3,000
  • Janāzah prayer services: Usually included in KMEC services
  • Ghousal & shrouding materials: Included in KMEC Funeral Services

Financial Support:

  • If funds are limited, Funeral Expenses Payment from the UK government can help cover burial costs, travel, or certificates.

7. Overseas Burial

  • For repatriation abroad (e.g., Bangladesh, Pakistan, Africa), permission from a Coroner is required.
  • KMEC can assist with paperwork, airline arrangements, and liaison with overseas cemeteries.

8. Estate & Legal Matters

After burial, families may need to handle:

  • Probate or Grant of Representation
  • Settling debts of the deceased
  • Closing accounts and notifying banks, benefits, and employers

KMEC can provide guidance but legal assistance from a solicitor may be required.

9. KMEC Funeral Services Support

  • Mortuary & Ghousal facilities for respectful Islamic preparation
  • Janāzah prayers led by authorised Imams
  • Local or international burial assistance
  • Trained male & female Ghousal teams
  • Advice on cemetery plots, grave fees, and headstones
  • Guidance on legal documentation

Important Notes:

  • Burial should be conducted as soon as possible — Islamic practice discourages delays.
  • Payments for services should be settled before burial, unless pre-arranged with KMEC.
  • Only KMEC-approved Imams may lead Janāzah at the centre.
  • Family members present for Ghousal should follow privacy rules (max 5 family members).
